ELIXIR 2012


Elixir, Science Exhibition for school students, is now in its third year. This event made sure to shine a light on school students and teachers. The theme of Elixir-2012 ran through many sessions. These included Science exhibits, Inter-department poster presentation, Inter-college paper presentation, Handling and application of Instruments. The two-day program was organized by Convener of Research and Seminar Committee, Coordinators, Faculty members of Department of Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry on 10th and 11th October, 2012. 

INAUGURATION FUNCTION
The program got on track with the Inaugural Function on 10th October in which Mrs.S.Shanthi, Chief Educational Officer, Kanchipuram was the Chief Guest. 



A melodious welcome song was presented by the students. Dr. K.R.Venkatesan, Principal, SSASC inaugurated the function by traditional lighting of the lamp, and delivered presidential address

Dr. B. Ramesh, Convener, Research and Seminar Committee, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology, presented the welcome address in which he expressed the gratitude to the CEO for gracing the function and highlighted the importance and need for such a program.

During this function, our Principal released the first copy of Proceeding entitled “ELIXIR-2012” which was received by Dr.B.Ramesh, Convener, Research and Seminar Committee, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Biotechnology. 



Finally, Dr. N.Rangarajan, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Biochemistry proposed the vote of thanks.

SCIENCE EXHIBITION
The budding scientists of our College presented many creative ideas as exhibits. We were able to see young science Legends among them. The Exhibits were creative and attractive and some were marvelous. The exhibits included global warming, bio-gas, bio-electricity, DNA structure, plant cell, cell signaling etc. Everything was wonderful. There were still models, working models and instruments. These provided a feast to our eyes.

Around 8000 students from different schools in and around Kanchipuram saw the exhibits. Such exhibitions have to be encouraged because students get an opportunity to present their ideas as well as seed new ideas in the minds of children. 













During the exhibition, our Principal honored the school teachers with a certificate and memento.













The Paper and Poster presentation sessions were conducted at the Seminar Hall on 11th October which was judged by Dr.K.Satyanarayana, Principal, T.S.Narayanaswami College of Arts and Science, Chennai. 



VALEDICTORY FUNCTION
After two days of exhibition, Elixir witnessed the valedictory function honoring the heroics of students and organizers, on the 11th October evening. The Chief Guests for this function were Dr.M.Elancheliyan, Professor, Department of Microbiology, PGIBMS, University of Madras, Taramani Campus, Chennai and Dr.K.Satyanarayana, Principal, T.S.Narayanaswami College of Arts and Science, Chennai. 


Welcoming the Chief Guest and other dignitaries, Dr.G.Suresh, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology has presented the welcome address.

In his Valedictory address, Dr.M.Elancheliyan, Professor, Department of Microbiology, PGIBMS, University of Madras, Taramani Campus, Chennai addressed the participants and encouraged them to participate in competitions with true spirit.

Attending the function as a Judge and Resource person, Dr.K.Satyanarayan, Principal, T.S.Narayanaswami College of Arts and Science, Chennai narrated the best model, paper and poster and congratulated the students for their dedicated work.

Prize distribution for the participants followed next. As the names were announced, all came in the order to receive certificates and prizes from the Chief Guests.

Guest Lecture and Fresher's Day Celebration 01/10/2012

A Guest Lecture program on Immunotechnology and Fresher’s Day were organized by the Dept. Of Biotechnology  (October 1, 2012). The Resource Person was Dr.Thiagarajan Raman, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Bioengineering from SASTRA University, Thanjavur











The program commenced with the welcome address given by Dr.B.Ramesh, Head of the Department of Biotechnology. This program was graced by the presence of our Principal, Dr.K.R.Venkatesan

The chief guest was introduced by Dr.A.Koodalingam, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology.After that the Resource Person gave his presentation on the topic Tumor Necrosis Factor and Arthritis. He explained the students about role of TNF in the inflammatory process and drugs for Rheumatoid arthritis. The students found the session to be highly informative and useful.

The technical content is the heart of our conference, which includes Paper and Poster Presentation by our department students. The intent of the Technical Papers and Posters Competition was to offer students the opportunity to display their technical accomplishments and receive recognition. Chief Guest judged the Paper and Poster presentation by students.

In the afternoon session cultural program was organized for Fresher’ and gifts were given to Fresher.

The program came to the end with the vote of thanks proposed by Ms.C.Vijaya Meena, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology. 

HEARTY CONGRATULATION TO DR.A.KOODALINGAM


We are delighted to announce that Dr. A. Koodalingam has published the article “Effect of a Bt-based product (Vectobar) on esterases and phosphatases from larvae of the mosquito Aedes aegypti” in Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology. Pesticide Biochemistry and Physiology is the Elsevier journal for the effects of pesticides on both parasites and hosts, with an impact factor of 1.71.

Congratulations to Asst Prof A.Koodalingam and his students. Their paper reports on the insecticidal efficacy of a Bt-based product on two developmental stages (fourth instar larvae and pupae) of the mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Welcome Miss M. Janani

Greetings to Miss. M. Janani,

     We wish to announce that, Miss. M. Janani, M.Tech, joined as Assistant Professor in Department of Biotechnology, Sri Sankara Arts & Science College, Enathur, Kanchipuram on 12.9.2012.


    Janani has completed her B.Tech in SASTRA University, and M.Tech degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from Anna University, Chennai. She cleared CSIR-NET examination on 2011 and also GATE examination with top grade in 2010.

    Her research interests include synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles for effective drug delivery.

       The Staff and Students are really excited about your joining in our department.
