In our biotechnology career development programme of our Watson and Crick Forum, Mr Jagannathan has given a wonderful and most inspiring talk to the students, sharing his knowledge.

At the end of the session, students were discussing with the resource person and clarified their doubts. 

We sincerely thank Mr. Jagannathan for sharing his valuable knowledge and insights on the scope of biotechnology with the students. His informative session helped the students understand the wide opportunities and future potential in this field. We truly appreciate his time, effort, and guidance, which inspired and motivated the students to learn more about biotechnology.

In the Watson and Crick forum, PG and Research Department of Biotechnology, Sri Sankara Arts and Science College, organised a student forum meet on 09/07/2026 from 1:00 to 1:30 PM.

K. Yoganathan from 2^nd M.Sc. Biotechnology gave a presentation on “Molecular Diagnosis techniques in oncology”. Department staff, Research Scholars and Students participated in the meeting.

The welcome address was given by Dr. B. Ramesh, HOD and Convenor

The forum meeting was over by 1:30 PM, with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Harishkumar Rajendran, coordinator of the Watson and Crick forum.

Inauguration Ceremony of the Diploma Programme in Andrology and Medical Lab Technology 2026-2027

The Fifth Inauguration Ceremony of the Diploma Programme in Andrology and Medical Lab Technology was organized by the Department of Biotechnology at Sri Sankara Arts and Science College on 29 June 2026.The programme was inaugurated by our beloved Principal Dr. R. Venkatesan, who presided over the function and delivered the inaugural address.  Dr. B. Ramesh Professor & Head, PG & Research Department of Biotechnology, welcomed the gathering. Mr. R. Purushothaman, Managing Director of Dr. Borus Institute, introduced the Diploma Programme in Andrology and Medical Lab Technology. He explained that Andrology is an important branch of medical laboratory science focusing on the diagnosis and management of male infertility. The programme covers advanced laboratory techniques such as semen analysis, sperm cryopreservation, sperm preparation for IUI and IVF procedures, and sperm processing. He further highlighted that one of the major strengths of the diploma programme is its extensive hands-on practical training. Students gain the necessary technical skills required to work in modern medical laboratories. They will also have the opportunity to analyze patient samples using advanced laboratory equipment under the guidance of experienced professionals. Finally, Dr. V. Guruchandran, Assistant Professor, proposed the vote of thanks. More than 200 college students participated in the programme and benefited from the session.

Introduction

Experiential learning plays a crucial role in biotechnology education. Research internships provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in real laboratory environments while gaining exposure to cutting-edge technologies.

Internship Experience

Mr. Yoganathan K, a final-year M.Sc. Biotechnology student of Sri Sankara Arts and Science College, successfully completed a research internship at the Dr. S. Krishnamurthi Centre for Research & Education in Cancer (SKCREC), a unit of Cachar Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (CCHRC), Silchar, Assam. SKCREC houses the DHR-ICMR Advanced Molecular Oncology Diagnostic Services (DIAMOnDS) Centre, a leading facility for molecular oncology diagnostics, cancer research, and scientific training in Northeast India. During the internship, he gained exposure to a multidisciplinary research environment focused on molecular diagnostics, translational cancer research, and advanced laboratory techniques.

Technical Skills Acquired

Data Interpretation and Scientific Reporting

Final Presentation A significant milestone of the internship was the successful presentation of his internship project before the research division. The presentation showcased the practical skills, laboratory exposure, and scientific understanding gained during the training period.

Microbial Art – Creativity Meets Science

Introduction

The PG and Research Department of Biotechnology organized a Microbial Art event on 23rd June 2026 at the UG Biotechnology Laboratory. The program aimed to blend scientific knowledge with creativity by encouraging students to create artistic designs using microbial culture concepts and microbiological techniques.

Objectives

• To promote scientific creativity among students.
• To enhance understanding of microorganisms and their growth patterns.
• To develop observation and analytical skills.
• To encourage innovative thinking through science-based art.
• To create awareness about the aesthetic and educational value of microbiology.

Event Proceedings

The event commenced at 09:30 AM with a brief introduction to microbial art and its significance in biotechnology. Faculty members explained the principles of microbial growth, aseptic techniques, and the importance of creativity in scientific research.

Students actively participated by designing and conceptualizing artistic patterns inspired by microorganisms, nature, and scientific themes. The activity provided an opportunity for students to apply their microbiological knowledge in an innovative and engaging manner.

Throughout the session, participants demonstrated enthusiasm, creativity, and teamwork. Faculty members guided the students and evaluated the artistic presentations based on originality, scientific relevance, and presentation.

Outcomes

Immunology experiment results of 2nd B.Sc Biotechnology

The immunology experiment "Separation of Serum and Plasma from the Blood Sample" was conducted today [20/06/2026] for our 2nd B.Sc Biotechnology students, and we got good results of clear separation of both plasma and serum as shown below.

       The third-year students warmly welcomed the first-year students to the department with a small token of welcome. The event provided an opportunity for interaction between seniors and juniors. The thoughtful initiative was well received by the first-year students and marked a pleasant beginning to their college journey.

We are happy to congratulate our faculty member Dr. A. Rajalakshmi on obtaining the SEED Grant of Rs. 4,92,000/- for her project entitled “Establishing a High-Throughput Computational Framework to Accelerate Natural Product-Based Drug Discovery across Multiple Therapeutic Domains”. We are confident that this grant will contribute greatly to the growth and development of the department and accelerate our molecular dynamic simulation capabilities up to five-fold. We extend our heartfelt congratulations once again and wish continued success in all future endeavours.
