Science Academies' Summer Research Fellowship Programme for Students and Teachers 2014

Summer Fellowship programme

The three national Science Academies offer several two-month Summer Fellowships to enable students/teachers (studying/teaching in India) to work with scientists associated with the three Academies during 2014. A copy of the application format, instructions to applicants including eligibility criteria, and a list of names of scientists/faculty who have consented to guide students/teachers to work on short-term projects is displayed online.

Applications are invited from interested students and teachers from all universities and colleges affiliated to UGC/AICTE/MCI/Accredited Institutions of State Universities for these Fellowships. The application should include: 

(a) the application form in the prescribed format; 

(b) a write-up (in about 150 - 250 words) as to what the applicant wants to learn and achieve;  

(c)the guide with whom the applicant would like to work. Student applicants should include a recommendation letter (in the prescribed format) familiar with their work, in a sealed envelope. The selected candidate may work with the assigned guide for two months any time during the calendar year, preferably during the summer.

The last date for receipt of applications is 30 November 2013.

Information of selection along with concurrence of the guide will be despatched around February–March 2014.

The selected students/teachers will be provided appropriate round trip train fare and a monthly fellowship to meet their living expenses at the place of work.

Eligibility criteria:

Second and Third year of BSc students

First year of MSc students

For student applicants, the minimum percentage of average marks in core subjects only (i.e. excluding languages) from X std. up to post-graduation (whichever years completed) should be 65% or above.

Pranav Alumni Association 2013 was successfully conducted in the Sankara Arts & Science College, Enathur, Kanchipuram on 18.8.2013. Miss Loganayaki - IISER Mohali Summer Program-2013

Ms. Loganayaki (outgoing MSc Biotechnology student) participated in prestigious IISER Mohali Summer Program-2013. She had undergone training for the period of last one month under the guidance of Dr. Kavitababu, in C. elegans Lab, IISER, Mohali. During her stay in IISER she learned many aspects of neurobiology of C. elegans.  It is interesting to note that Ms.Loganayaki is also one of the recipients of IISc Summer Research Fellowship-2013. Her student project proposal was selected and awarded by Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai.

                The staff and students of Department of Biotechnology appreciate her hard work and dedication.

Request for Application Form

• Each Stream has its own application form.
• Students may apply either by hard copy or Online (http://www.kvpy.org.in/).
• For Online application forms, click here. Those who are unable to apply online may request for a hard Copy.
• A hard copy of the application form can be obtained from KVPY on request on a plain paper enclosing the paid “Bank Challan/ Pay-in-slip” (available at: http://www.kvpy.org.in/), clearly indicating the stream SA/SX/SB on the envelope.
• APPLICATION FEE:  An application fee of Rs. 500/- may be remitted at any core banking branch of the STATE BANK OF INDIA to the credit of “Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) A/c. No. 10270577392”
• The Application fee is  exempted for the following category of students:
1. Students belonging to SC/ST community
2. Students With Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged Students)

• The completed application form along with the following documents, superscribing on the envelope the stream applied for, should reach the KVPYoffice on or before 02/09/2013.
1. Caste certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed proforma in the case of SC/ST students.
2. Medical certificate from the prescribed authority in case of Persons With Disability (physically and visually challenged students) certifying the percentage of disability.
3. Copy of the marks/grade statement of the previous qualifying examination(s).
4. The original Pay-in-slip of Rs. 500/- if applicable.

II MSC and III BSc Biotechnology students in seminar cum workshop

Total of 43 students belongs from II MSc and III BSc Biotechnology of  Sri Sankara Arts and Science College, Kanchipuram participated in National seminar on “Applications of Green Technologies for Separation of Bioproducts” held at Department of Biotechnology, Karpaga Vinayaga College of Engineering and Technology, Madhuranthagam on 22^nd & 23^rd July 2013.  

Our MSc Biotechnology students (14 members) presented their research findings in the form of oral presentation. All our students enthusiastically attended various lectures presented by experts and practised their technical skills during Worksop conducted by leading scientists.

 Dr. A. KOODALINGAM, Assistant Professor and Miss C. VIJAYAMEENA, Assistant Professor of Department of Biotechnology, Sri Sankara Arts and Science College, Kanchipuram assisted our students.
