KNOW OUR STUDENTS
Our Department is
happy to recognize our student Mr. S. Jagan of III B.Sc., Biotechnology for his
profound knowledge of Organic farming. He along with his father has been doing
the organic farming for the past 14 years. He is cultivating more than 80
different endangered and traditional varieties of various vegetables in an area
of ~3.5 acres of cultivable land in Ponnur, Vandavasi, Thiruvannamalai
District, Tamil Nadu. He is also cultivating other rare and endangered crop
varieties of Tamil Nadu. Some of the crop varieties include Air potato, 30
varieties of Tomato, 10 varieties of Bottle gourd, Snake gourd, White Yam
Rhizome (வெà®±்à®±ிலை வள்ளிக்கிà®´à®™்கு), lemon grass, broad beans, brinjal, many different varieties of
spinach, long pepper (திப்பிலி), sweet flag (வசம்பு), Coix lacryma-jobi seeds (நெà®±்பவளம்),
and many more. Under a consortium named
“Marabu Vidhaigal Ulagam Koottamaippu” (மரபு விதைகள் உலகம் கூட்டமைப்பு), he is distributing the seeds of all these plants to other farmers
and also training them on the suitable crops and techniques to be followed to
harvest in their cultivation lands. Currently, under his guidance Solanum
Xanthocarpum (Yellow Fruit Night-Shade- கண்டங்கத்திà®°ி) has been planted through multi-layered farming techniques (7 அடுக்கு விவசாயம்) in an area of ~150 acres. His family has been serving in Sidhha
medical treatments for various ailments including arthritis, infertility, skin
diseases, and ailments related to children. We appreciate his efforts and the
Department of Biotechnology extends its hands to promote organic farming using
bio techniques and plant tissue culture.
